After three weeks of filming with friends and family in Bali, William Maranda brings to Vancouver a documentary showcasing the unique and familiar qualities of renowned Balinese dance technique, Keras and Manis.
A visual and emotional exploration of the Balinese spirit and tradition, William Maranda guides the film through the luscious country side and benevolent community, searching for the magic the drives the dance.

The Story
Inspired by the energy and commitment of Balinese dancers, William Maranda made a special trip to Bali to capture the
motivation and spirit behind the most renowned Balinese dance technique, Keras and Manis. With an entirely Balinese Crew, Maranda was guided by the Internationally acclaimed Balinese Dancer and Instructor I Nyoman Budi Artha, Director of

Leading William through buzzing streets and colourful Temples, Budi revealed
the secrets of Keras and Manis and provided the exceptional privilege of interviewing
Professor I Wayan Dibia who confirmed, through mythology and theology, that
Keras and Manis can only be truly achieved with inspiration from the Gods; Taksu.
Running through the city streets and being welcomed into people's homes,
William Maranda followed children, adults and families, with a cameraman beside him, to attend their lessons, training and performances and captured what is a magical glimpse into a world of ancient beliefs and cultural preservation.

The Post Production for KERAS AND MANIS, The Way of Bali began on Walton Road in Richmond, BC where Bali-born,
Heny Janawati, worked along side her Canadian father (Maranda) to translate the Indonesian Dialogue of the film into
English and to share the cultural meaning of each dance and story that is showcased throughout the documentary.
